Five consecutive Olympic gold medals — the greatest achievement in rowing and one of the greatest in sport.
Sir Steven Geoffrey Redgrave was born in Marlow, Buckinghamshire in 1962. He won five consecutive Olympic gold medals across five Games from 1984 to 2000 — the first rower to achieve this feat. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1997. He told the press "If anyone sees me get in a boat again, you have my permission to shoot me" after winning his fourth gold in Atlanta 1996 — then won his fifth in Sydney 2000 aged 38. His fifth gold — in the coxless four with Pinsent, Foster and Cracknell — is the most celebrated individual Olympic achievement in British sporting history. He was knighted in 2001.
