India's first World Cup — the catch at Lord's and an all-rounder who transformed Indian cricket.
Kapil Dev Nikhanj was born in Chandigarh, India in 1959. He led India to his first Cricket World Cup victory in 1983 — defeating the favourites West Indies at Lord's in one of cricket's greatest upsets. He took 434 Test wickets — the world record when he retired, since surpassed. His innings of 175 not out against Zimbabwe at the 1983 World Cup — with India at 17-5 — is the most celebrated individual innings in World Cup history. He was the finest Indian fast bowler of his generation and one of the top five all-rounders in cricket history.
