India's first great fast bowler of the modern era and a consistent wicket-taker across a decade.
Javagal Srinath was born on 31 August 1969 in Mysore, Karnataka, India. He made his Test debut in 1991 and became India's first genuine fast bowler in the modern era — in a country traditionally dominated by spin. Srinath took 236 Test wickets in 67 Tests at 30.49, and 315 ODI wickets. He generated genuine pace and movement and was a key part of India's cricket in the 1990s and early 2000s. He was a qualified mechanical engineer who chose cricket over engineering. After retiring in 2003 he became an ICC match referee.
ICC Match Referee (post-career)
He holds an engineering degree but chose cricket over a career as a mechanical engineer — representing the educated, professional face of Indian cricket.
