Florida's 1996 Heisman winner who led the Gators to his first national championship.
Danny Wuerffel was born in Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 1974. He attended the University of Florida under coach Steve Spurrier and won the Heisman Trophy in 1996 after throwing for 3,625 yards and 39 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions — an efficiency rating that remains among the highest in Heisman winner history. He led Florida to its first national championship, defeating Florida State in the SEC Championship Game and Nebraska 52-20 in the Sugar Bowl. His four-year career produced 10,875 passing yards and 114 touchdowns — both Florida records. He won the Davey O'Brien Award twice (1995, 1996). He was the SEC Player of the Year twice. New Orleans Saints selected him in the fourth round of the 1997 NFL Draft. His professional career was limited but his college career — four years in Spurrier's Fun and Gun offence, one Heisman and one national championship — represents one of the most complete college quarterback careers of the 1990s. He founded Desire Street Ministries in New Orleans and was recognised with multiple humanitarian awards after football.
