Olympic gold medallist at Athens 2004 as part of the coxless four — Ed Coode stepped up as a late replacement alongside Cracknell, Pinsent and Williams in one of the most successful British rowing boats of the modern era. His performance in a tense final where Britain held off Canada was faultless, and the victory remains one of the most dramatic finishes in Olympic rowing history.
Ed Coode was born in Truro, Cornwall in 1975. He won Olympic gold in the coxless four at Athens 2004 — replacing the injured Steve Williams in the crew alongside Pinsent, Cracknell and Williams. His inclusion in the crew came late — adding pressure to his preparation — yet he performed under one of the most scrutinised individual selection decisions in British sport. He won two World Championship titles. He was awarded an MBE in 2005.
