Voltage — the former electrician who won the PDC World Championship at his first attempt in 2018, defeating Phil Taylor 7-2 in what proved to be Taylor's final professional match. Rob Cross's debut season on the PDC Tour remains one of the most extraordinary in sporting history: a complete unknown who walked in, won the lot, and became world number one.
Robert Cross was born in Hastings, East Sussex in 1990. He worked as an electrician before taking up competitive darts seriously and qualifying for the PDC Tour in 2017. His first full year on Tour — 2017/18 — produced one of sport's great stories. He won the PDC World Championship at his debut, defeating Phil Taylor 7-2 in the final in what proved to be Taylor's last professional match. He was 27 years old. He became world number one in 2018 — the fastest rise to the summit from Tour debut in the sport's history. He has since won the European Championship and the World Grand Prix and remained a consistent top-10 player. His smooth, clinical throwing action and his ability to perform without apparent nerves in the biggest finals marked him immediately as a player of the highest quality. An electrician who became world champion in Year One — the story does not get more remarkable.
PDC World Champion 2018
Cross won the PDC World Championship at the very first attempt in his debut season on Tour — no player before or since has achieved this.
