The first Italian-American first overall pick — 2023 Rookie of the Year and Orlando's franchise cornerstone.
Paolo Andrea Banchero was born in Seattle, Washington in 2002, the son of Mario Banchero who played college football. Orlando Magic selected him first overall in the 2022 NBA Draft after one season at Duke University. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 2023 unanimously. His career average of 22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game across his first three seasons is exceptional — particularly the assists number for a power forward. He was selected to one All-Star game by age 21. He transformed the Orlando Magic from a fringe playoff team into a genuine Eastern Conference contender alongside Franz Wagner. He represented Italy internationally through his father's Italian heritage. His scoring versatility — he can post up, face up, attack the rim or step back to the three-point line — combined with his playmaking ability for a player his size make him one of the most complete young forwards in the league. His combination of size (6ft 10in), skill and competitive maturity places him among the most promising players of his draft class and generation.
