Uncompromising Argentine centre-back and World Cup winner whose relentless defending and leadership made him one of the most reliable defenders of his era.
Nicolás Hernan Otamendi was born in Buenos Aires on 18 February 1988. A commanding and aggressive centre-back, Otamendi is one of the most tenacious defenders of his generation. He came through Velez Sarsfield's academy before moving to Porto, where he won multiple Portuguese titles. A £27m move to Manchester City in 2015 saw him establish himself as a key Premier League defender, winning the Premier League in 2018 and 2019 under Pep Guardiola. He later joined Benfica, winning the Primeira Liga. Internationally, Otamendi won the Copa América with Argentina in 2021 and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022 — completing a remarkable collection of honours. He has earned over 100 caps for Argentina. His partnership with various centre-back partners for club and country has been defined by his intensity, aerial strength and refusal to concede.
