Powerful and prolific Australian striker who terrorised defences in the Premier League, Champions League and international football during a distinguished career.

Mark Anthony Viduka was born in Melbourne on 9 October 1975. A physically imposing yet technically gifted centre-forward with exceptional control, strength and an intelligent first touch, Viduka was one of the most complete strikers of his era. He came through Melbourne Knights before Celtic, where he fired them to the Scottish title before Leeds United signed him for £6m in 2000. His four seasons at Elland Road were outstanding — he scored 59 goals in 147 appearances including four in one match against Liverpool. He moved to Middlesbrough and then Newcastle United. For Australia he earned 43 caps and scored 11 goals, captaining the Socceroos and appearing at the 2006 World Cup, scoring a stunning goal against Japan. His reluctance to play international football was sometimes noted, but his talent was never questioned. He was Australia's greatest striker before the Tim Cahill era.
