Greece's finest female player and a consistent top-10 power baseliner on the WTA Tour.
Maria Sakkari was born on 26 July 1995 in Athens, Greece, the daughter of tennis professional Angeliki Kanellopoulou. She turned professional in 2012 and became Greece's highest-ranked female player, breaking into the top 5 in 2021. She reached the semi-finals of Roland Garros and the US Open in 2021, her best Grand Slam results. Sakkari is known for her powerful baseline game, fitness and fighting spirit, though closing out big matches has sometimes eluded her. She has broken multiple Greek records and is a role model for the sport in her country.
Roland Garros Semi-finalist 2021
She reached both the Roland Garros and US Open semi-finals in the same year (2021) — an extraordinary double achievement.
