NBA champion and Defensive Player of the Year — the most decorated Spanish center in NBA history.
Marc Gasol was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1985, the younger brother of NBA player Pau Gasol. Memphis Grizzlies selected him 48th overall in the 2007 NBA Draft. His 13-season career produced 14.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game along with three All-Star appearances. He won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2013 and an NBA championship with the Toronto Raptors in 2019. He won the World Championship with Spain in 2006 and 2019. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023. He was the anchor of the Memphis Grizzlies' Grit and Grind era alongside Mike Conley, Zach Randolph and Tony Allen — a team identity built around toughness, defence and collective effort. His passing ability from the center position — 3.3 assists per game across his career — reflected European training that developed every dimension of the position. The Gasol brothers — Pau winning two championships with the Lakers, Marc winning one with Toronto — are the most accomplished sibling pair in NBA history.
