The Dragon — Slovenia's Most Improved Player and All-Star who helped lead his country to EuroBasket gold alongside Luka Dončić in 2017.
Goran Dragic was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 1986. San Antonio Spurs selected him 45th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft. His 14-season career produced 14.2 points and 5.5 assists per game and one All-Star appearance. He won the Most Improved Player award in 2014 after averaging 20.3 points per game for Phoenix. He reached the NBA Finals with the Miami Heat in 2020 — the Orlando Bubble season — but suffered a torn plantar plate injury in his left foot in the first game and played through it for the remainder of the series before ultimately withdrawing. He led Slovenia to the EuroBasket gold medal in 2017 alongside Luka Doncic — one of the finest small national team runs in European basketball history. He was a mentor to Doncic in the national team. He became Slovenia's all-time leading scorer and assists leader in international competition. He retired following the 2022 season. He was respected throughout the league for his toughness — his decision to play through injury in the 2020 Finals despite partial mobility showed a competitive heart that coaches and teammates consistently cited.
