The Iceman — PDC World Champion in 2021 and former professional rugby union player, whose transition from the rugby field to the oche is one of sport's most remarkable career changes. Price's powerful throw, fierce competitive intensity and willingness to show raw emotion on stage made him one of darts' most compelling and divisive figures.
Gerwyn Price was born in Waun-Lwyd, Wales on 18 March 1985. He played professional rugby union as a flanker for clubs including Llanelli, Cardiff and Newport, winning 62 caps for the Welsh national team. He took up darts seriously in his late twenties and turned PDC professional in 2014, making immediate progress up the rankings through relentless scoring and a powerful, flat throwing action. By 2018 he had won the European Championship and reached the world's top five. In January 2021 he won the PDC World Championship, defeating Gary Anderson in the final, to become the first Welsh PDC world champion. He held the world number one ranking in 2021. His intense, often confrontational approach on stage earned him fines and criticism from opponents and sections of the crowd, though he remained one of the sport's most compelling performers throughout. His story — from professional rugby to world darts champion — remains unique in sporting history.
