Ohio State Heisman winner whose bruising style defined Big Ten running back play.
Edward Nathan George Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1973. He attended Ohio State University under coach John Cooper and won the Heisman Trophy in 1995 after rushing for 1,826 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's best running back. His four-year Ohio State career produced 3,768 yards and 44 touchdowns. His style — powerful, physical and relentless — fit perfectly in the Big Ten where running backs were expected to earn every yard against conference defences that featured multiple future NFL players. He won the Big Ten title with Ohio State in 1996. Tennessee Titans selected him 14th overall in the 1996 NFL Draft. His nine-season professional career produced 10,441 rushing yards and six Pro Bowl appearances. He was the Titans' primary offensive weapon during his run to Super Bowl XXXIV following the 1999 season. His combination of college Heisman excellence and sustained professional production — uncommon for running backs — made him one of the more completely successful college-to-NFL transitions of the 1990s.
