Denis Shapovalov was born on 15 April 1999 in Tel Aviv, Israel, to Russian parents who emigrated to Canada. He announced himself to the world at the 2017 Davis Cup, where he accidentally hit chair umpire Arnaud Gabas in the face with a ball while smashing. Despite that incident, he turned professional and became one of the most exciting young talents, reaching the 2021 Wimbledon semi-finals. He is a left-hander with an exceptional one-handed backhand and inventive shot-making. Shapovalov is known for his creativity and has won multiple ATP titles, though he has battled injury in recent years.
