PSV's Eredivisie golden boy who scored in three consecutive World Cup games on debut — then joined Liverpool.
Cody Mathes Gakpo was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands in 2000. PSV's academy produced him and he became his most celebrated player of the 2020s — scoring 23 Eredivisie goals in 2022-23 and winning two league titles. He scored in three consecutive games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar — no Dutch player had achieved this — across the group stage and round of 16. Liverpool paid £37 million for him in January 2023. His first full Liverpool season produced 18 goals across all competitions and the Premier League title in 2024. His combination of pace, directness and finishing quality with both feet has made him one of the Premier League's most dangerous wide forwards. He represented the Netherlands 38 times. He was raised in a religious household and has spoken publicly about his Christian faith throughout his career. His PSV development, World Cup debut impact and Premier League adaptation represent an impressive individual progression from academy to international and elite club level within five years.
