The most complete player in women's tennis — retired at 25 as world number one, unbeaten.
Ashleigh Barty was born in Ipswich, Queensland in 1996. She won three Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces — the rarest individual achievement in women's tennis. She retired in March 2022 aged 25, ranked number one in the world, stating she had achieved her dreams and wanted to live a private life. Her retirement was universally described as one of the most gracious exits in sport — she had received no injury, faced no controversy, and was simply done. She was the first Australian to win Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980 — which Goolagong Cawley attended to watch. She later played professional cricket.
