The first Canadian selected first overall — from underachiever to NBA champion and All-Star.
Andrew Christian Wiggins was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1995, the son of former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins. Cleveland Cavaliers selected him first overall in the 2014 NBA Draft — the first Canadian-born player to be taken first overall — and immediately traded him to Minnesota. His first six seasons with the Timberwolves were frustrating — elite athleticism and scoring ability but inconsistent effort on the defensive end and no playoff success. His career transformed after his trade to the Golden State Warriors in 2020. Under Steve Kerr's system he became a genuine two-way player, helping the Warriors win the 2022 NBA championship. In the 2022 Finals he averaged 18.3 points per game and defended against the Boston Celtics' top scorers. He was selected to his first All-Star game in 2022. He averaged 17.9 points per game across his career. He won Olympic gold with Canada at Paris 2024 — a culmination of the country's basketball development. His athleticism — described as among the most naturally gifted of his generation — combined with his improved commitment made him a legitimately valuable starter on a championship team.
