Arthur Antunes Coimbra — Zico — was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1953 and spent the bulk of his career at Flamengo (1971–1983, 1985–1989), scoring 508 goals in 731 appearances across his career — 333 of them for Flamengo. He earned 88 Brazil caps scoring 66 goals. A brief spell at Udinese in Serie A (1983–85) produced 52 goals in 80 appearances. He later played for Kashima Antlers in Japan (1991–94), helping establish the J-League. He scored 508 career goals and 232 assists in 731 appearances. His top speed was 30.5 km/h and he covered 10.4 km per game. He won the Copa Libertadores (1981) and Intercontinental Cup (1981) with Flamengo. He won 4 Brazilian Championships and 6 Campeonato Carioca titles. He won the Ballon d'Or in 1981 and FIFA World Player of the Year in 1981 and 1983. He scored 66 goals in 88 international appearances — one of the highest ratios for a Brazilian player. He participated in the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups. The 1982 Brazil team — featuring Zico, Falcão, Sócrates and Júnior — is considered the finest to not win the tournament.
