The Roadrunner — ten Stanley Cups as the most dangerous speedster in the Canadiens dynasty.
Yvan Serge Cournoyer was born in Drummondville, Quebec in 1943. He spent his entire 16-season career with the Montreal Canadiens — winning ten Stanley Cup championships (the second-most of any player in the post-Original Six era, behind Jean Béliveau's ten). He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1973. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982. His nickname the Roadrunner reflected extraordinary skating speed — he was considered the fastest player in the NHL throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. He scored 428 career goals — significant for a player whose primary value was speed rather than physical size or strength. He scored the famous Canada-tying goal in Game 8 of the 1972 Summit Series — the goal that set up Paul Henderson's series winner. His ten championships represent one of the most decorated individual careers in the sport's history.
