Denmark's greatest tennis player — former world No. 1 and 2018 Australian Open champion who fought rheumatoid arthritis throughout her late career.
Caroline Wozniacki was born in Odense, Denmark in 1990, the daughter of Polish professional footballer Piotr Woźniacki. She turned professional in 2005 and won 30 WTA singles titles. She was world number one for 71 weeks — the first Scandinavian player to reach the ranking's summit. She won her only Grand Slam at the 2018 Australian Open, defeating Simona Halep in an extraordinary three-set final. She reached the US Open final twice (2009, 2014) without winning. She was renowned for her defensive baseline game, court coverage and extraordinary physical fitness — running the New York City Marathon in 3:26:33 in 2014. She announced her rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis publicly in 2018, managing the condition while continuing to compete at the highest level. She retired in January 2020 after losing at the Australian Open — a Grand Slam champion in her own right. She married NBA champion David Lee in 2019. Her consistency — remaining in the world's top 10 for the majority of a 15-year career — defines her legacy.
Australian Open 2018
She held the world No.1 ranking without winning a Grand Slam for several years — a record-length at the top.
