The Rocketman comeback — World Champion at 33 after an eight-year absence from competition.
Mark Occhilupo was born in Kurnell, New South Wales in 1966. He was one of the world's most exciting young surfers in the mid-1980s before disappearing from competition for eight years due to mental health challenges — including severe depression, gaining significant weight and becoming largely reclusive. He returned to professional surfing in 1992 and won the World Championship in 1999 — aged 33 — in one of surfing's most celebrated comebacks. His story — documented in several films — is a touchstone for discussions about mental health in sport.
