Steven George Gerrard was born in Whiston, Merseyside in 1980 and spent his entire playing career at Liverpool, becoming the most important English player of his generation.

Steven George Gerrard was born in Whiston, Merseyside in 1980 and joined Liverpool's academy at eight years old. He spent his entire 17-year professional playing career at Anfield, making 710 appearances and scoring 186 goals — the highest total by a midfielder in the club's history. His all-round ability was exceptional: thunderous shooting from distance, precise long-range passing, defensive awareness and the stamina to cover the entire pitch for 90 minutes in every match. He captained Liverpool from 2003 until his departure in 2015. The 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul defined his career — with Liverpool 3-0 down at half-time against AC Milan, Gerrard's driving header sparked one of football's most improbable comebacks, Liverpool ultimately winning on penalties. He won the Champions League (2005), UEFA Cup (2001), two FA Cups (2001, 2006) and five League Cups. He was named UEFA Club Footballer of the Year in 2005 and PFA Players' Player of the Year. He earned 114 England caps, scoring 21 goals, and captained the national side from 2010. He moved to LA Galaxy in 2015 before returning to management at Rangers, leading them to an unbeaten Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21. He later managed Aston Villa. His slip against Chelsea in April 2014 — which gifted Manchester City the title — remains one of English football's most painful moments. A generational leader and the finest player of the Premier League era never to have won the top-flight title.
