Mexico's greatest racing driver — Red Bull's world championship wingman and Baku specialist.
Sergio Michel Pérez Mendoza was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico in 1990. His father Antonio Pérez Garibay is a former racing driver and businessman. He made his F1 debut with Sauber in 2011 and showed exceptional racecraft — his ability to manage tyres over long stints is considered among the best in the sport's history. McLaren, Force India/Racing Point and Aston Martin gave him consecutive seasons before Red Bull signed him in 2021 — he won his first race for them at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He won 13 Grands Prix for Red Bull alongside Verstappen, including three victories at Baku — the most wins at that circuit by any driver. His 2023 season alongside Verstappen produced the most dominant constructors' championship in F1 history. His performances in 2024 declined significantly — generating public discussion about his future — and Red Bull ended his contract at the season's end. He is Mexico's most celebrated racing driver and generated F1 interest in Mexico City — the Mexican Grand Prix regularly produces capacity sell-out crowds. He is the most successful Latin American driver in F1 history.
