Eccentric Colombian goalkeeper famous for his scorpion kick save and one of the most flamboyant personalities in football history.
José René Higuita Zapata was born in Medellín, Colombia on 27 August 1966. Known as 'El Loco' (The Crazy One), Higuita was a sweeper-keeper decades before the term existed, regularly dribbling out of his penalty area and attempting outfield skills. He enjoyed his greatest success at Atlético Nacional, winning the Copa Libertadores in 1989 and earning huge popularity at home. He appeared at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups for Colombia, though his legendary status was cemented when he was nutmegged by Roger Milla in the 1990 World Cup Round of 16, contributing to a shock Colombian exit. He became globally famous for his 'scorpion kick' save — flicking the ball away with both heels whilst diving forward — performed against England at Wembley in 1995. His career was also disrupted by a brief imprisonment in 1993 relating to a kidnapping negotiation. He earned 68 caps.
