Carlos Puyol Saforcada was born in La Pobla de Segur, Catalonia in 1978 and joined Barcelona's academy at 17, making his first-team debut in 1999. He spent his entire professional career at the club (1999–2014), making 593 first-team appearances and winning 3 Champions Leagues, 6 La Liga titles, 2 Copa del Reys and 22 major trophies. He earned 100 Spain caps scoring 3 goals and won the World Cup (2010) and two European Championships (2008, 2012). His iconic header in the 2010 World Cup semi-final against Germany — the goal that sent Spain to the final — is the defining image of his international career. He won 78% of aerial duels throughout his career — among the highest for any centre-back in Champions League history. He kept 289 clean sheets in 693 career appearances. His top speed of 30.5 km/h and 10.6 km per game reflected a defender of considerable physicality. He was voted the best defender in the world in 2008 and 2010. His distinctive long hair and headband made him one of the most recognisable defenders of his generation. He retired in 2014 due to persistent knee and shoulder injuries.
