Fernando Ruiz Hierro was born in Vélez-Málaga, Spain on 23 March 1968. He joined Real Madrid from Real Valladolid in 1989 and spent 14 years at the club, making 601 appearances and scoring an extraordinary 127 goals — a remarkable tally for a defender. He won five La Liga titles, three Champions Leagues (1998, 2000, 2002) and captained the club during one of its most successful eras. His leadership, aerial prowess, passing range and ability to score from set pieces and penalties made him one of the most complete defenders in football history. He earned 89 caps for Spain. He later played for Bolton Wanderers and Al-Rayyan.
