Philipp Lahm was born in Munich, Germany in 1983. Bayern Munich's academy produced him before a key loan spell at Stuttgart developed his tactical education. His fourteen Bayern senior seasons produced seven Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokals and the 2013 Champions League Treble. He was Germany's World Cup-winning captain in 2014 — lifting the trophy in Brazil. He was named UEFA's best defender twice. His ability to play at right-back, left-back and in central midfield at international level — each position to an elite standard — reflected tactical intelligence that his coaches described as unique in the modern game. He could read the game three moves ahead and adjust his positioning accordingly. He retired at 33 — voluntarily, at the peak of his powers — refusing Bayern's attempt to extend his contract because he felt the demands of elite football had been met.
