Charlie Hustle — the all-time hits leader permanently banned from baseball for gambling.
Peter Edward Rose was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1941. He has the most hits in MLB history — 4,256 — and played more games than any position player. His hustle — he ran to first base on walks — earned him the nickname Charlie Hustle. He won three World Series. He was banned from baseball for life in 1989 for betting on games as manager of the Reds — including betting on the Reds. He has never been inducted into the Hall of Fame. He died in September 2024. Whether his records or his ban define his legacy remains the most unresolved question in baseball history.
