Towering German centre-back whose intelligence, positioning and leadership compensated for his lack of pace at Arsenal.
Per Mertesacker was born in Hanover, Germany on 29 September 1984. He began at Hannover 96 before joining Werder Bremen, where he became one of the Bundesliga's best defenders. He joined Arsenal in 2011 for £8 million. Standing 6ft 6in, his aerial dominance, reading of the game and leadership were exceptional, even though he was openly honest about not being the quickest. He made 221 appearances for Arsenal, winning three FA Cups, and was named captain in 2016. His famous post-match interview after a North London derby, admitting his 'big problems' with pre-match nerves, endeared him to fans. He earned 104 caps for Germany and won the 2014 World Cup. He later became Arsenal's Academy Manager.

In a famous post-match interview, he admitted he felt physically sick with nerves before every match, an incredibly honest admission that resonated with fans.
