The Magic Man — three Stanley Cups and four Selke Trophies, the most complete two-way forward in hockey history.
Pavel Datsyuk was born in Sverdlovsk, Russia in 1978. Detroit Red Wings selected him 171st overall in the 1998 NHL Draft — one of the greatest draft value picks in hockey history. His career produced 314 goals and 604 assists for 918 career points. He won three Stanley Cup championships with Detroit (2002, 2008, 2009). He won four Selke Trophies as the NHL's best defensive forward (2008, 2009, 2010, 2013) — the most in NHL history — and three Lady Byng Trophies for sportsmanship. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2020 and named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017. He was nicknamed the Magic Man for his extraordinary puck-handling — his ability to steal the puck in the offensive zone through deception and his creative scoring plays were described by coaches as the finest individual skill set in the league during his prime. He won Olympic gold with Russia in 2018. He returned to Russia to play in the KHL after the Red Wings' dynasty. He is the consensus greatest two-way forward of the modern era.
