The Golden Boy — six-weight world champion and the most commercially successful Hispanic boxer of his era.
Oscar De La Hoya was born in East Los Angeles, California in 1973 to Mexican immigrant parents. He won the Olympic lightweight gold medal at Barcelona 1992 — the only boxing gold for Team USA that year, which he dedicated to his mother who had died of cancer the previous year. He won world titles in six weight classes from super featherweight to super welterweight. His promotions company Golden Boy Promotions became the dominant boxing promotional entity in North America. He had the highest pay-per-view buy rate in boxing during the 2000s, generating multiple million-dollar gates. He announced in 2021 that he had contracted COVID-19 and been hospitalised.
