The greatest American-born player in NHL history — 561 goals and a Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars.
Michael Thomas Modano was born in Livonia, Michigan in 1970. Minnesota North Stars selected him first overall in the 1988 NHL Draft. His 22-season career produced 561 goals and 813 assists for 1,374 career points — the most by an American-born player in NHL history. He won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2014 and named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in 2017. He moved with the franchise from Minnesota to Dallas in 1993 and spent his entire career there — representing both cities and becoming the most recognisable athlete in Dallas sports history for a generation. His combination of skating ability, playmaking and goal-scoring — all at a level that sustained over two decades — made him the standard against which American-born NHL players are measured. He represented the USA in multiple Olympics and World Championships.
