Record holder for most Tour de France stage wins (35), surpassing Eddy Merckx.
Mark Simon Cavendish was born in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1985. He won 35 Tour de France stages in total — surpassing Eddy Merckx's record of 34 in 2024. He won the Green Jersey four times. He won the UCI Road World Championship in 2011. He won 15 Giro d'Italia stages and 162 UCI stage races in total. His sprinting — explosive from 200 metres, exceptional positioning in bunch finishes — made him the finest pure sprinter of his generation. He overcame a prolonged battle with Epstein-Barr virus and a serious 2021 Tour crash before breaking the record in 2024. He retired after the 2024 Paris Olympics. His 35 Tour stages will stand as the record for generations.
