Margaret Court (née Smith) was born on 16 July 1942 in Albury, New South Wales, Australia. She turned professional in 1968 and won 24 Grand Slam singles titles — the most of any player in history — along with 19 doubles and 19 mixed doubles titles, for a record 62 Grand Slam titles in all. In 1970 she completed the calendar Grand Slam — only the second woman to do so. She was physically dominant, standing 5'9" and with exceptional athleticism. In later life she became an ordained minister and her conservative religious views on homosexuality have been controversial.
