48-0 as champion — the most underrated dominant heavyweight of modern boxing.
Larry Holmes was born in Cuthbert, Georgia in 1949. He was Muhammad Ali's sparring partner before winning the WBC heavyweight title from Ken Norton in 1978 in one of the sport's most dramatic fights — scoring a knockdown in the final round to earn a split decision. He defended the title 20 times — one fewer than Joe Louis's record — before losing to Michael Spinks in 1985. He had a record of 48-0 as champion. He is widely regarded as one of the most underrated heavyweight champions in boxing history — overshadowed by his position between the Ali and Tyson eras despite a reign of exceptional quality.
