Four world titles and one of boxing's greatest rivalries — Márquez's knockout of Pacquiao in his fourth fight is the most dramatic punch of the modern era.
Juan Manuel Márquez Méndez was born in Mexico City in 1973 and built a professional record of 56 wins (40 by knockout), 7 losses and 1 draw across 64 fights from 1993 to 2014, winning world titles in four weight divisions — super bantamweight, featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight. He is best known for his four fights with Manny Pacquiao — one of the great rivalries in boxing history — in which the two men fought a collective 48 rounds. His 6th-round knockout of Pacquiao in December 2012 — a right hand that left Pacquiao face-down on the canvas — was voted Knockout of the Year and was widely seen as the most dramatic conclusion to a long-running rivalry in boxing history. He was Ring Magazine Fighter of the Year in 2009 and 2012. His counter-punching technique — waiting for opponents to commit before delivering precise, damaging combinations — was considered the finest of his era. He won 40 of his 56 fights by knockout. His first fight with Pacquiao in 2004 ended in a controversial draw after Márquez was knocked down three times in the first round. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2019.
