Captain Serious — three Stanley Cups and the most complete two-way centre of his generation.
Jonathan Bryan Toews was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1988. Chicago Blackhawks selected him third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. His 16-season career — entirely with the Blackhawks — produced 444 goals and 618 assists for 1,062 career points. He won three Stanley Cup championships (2010, 2013, 2015) and was named captain of the team at age 20. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 2010 and two Selke Trophies as the NHL's best defensive forward (2013, 2014). He won Olympic gold with Canada in 2010 and 2014 — part of both golden generations. He won the championship at the 2010 World Junior Championship as captain, the 2010 Olympics as captain, and the 2010 Stanley Cup as captain — three different championships as captain in the same calendar year, an unprecedented achievement. He was known as Captain Serious for his composure and leadership maturity. He retired in 2023 after disclosing a long-term health condition affecting his energy levels. His trophy case and his three championships alongside Patrick Kane define the most decorated era in Blackhawks history.
