The most expensive defender in history at the time — and the most publicly discussed since.
Harry Maguire was born in Sheffield, England in 1993. Manchester United paid £80 million for him in August 2019 — the most expensive transfer for a defender in football history at that point. The fee created expectations that were impossible to consistently meet, and every below-par individual performance generated disproportionate criticism amplified by social media. He was good by any objective measure — consistent in his positioning, excellent aerially, reliable in possession — but not £80 million exceptional. He was appointed Manchester United captain in 2020. An incident in Mykonos, Greece in 2020 — resulting in a Greek court conviction later overturned — added personal controversy. He remained England's regular starting centre-back under Gareth Southgate despite club demotion — Southgate's faith generating its own debate. He reached two European Championship finals with England (2021, 2024). He was transferred to West Ham in 2024. His career is football's most discussed example of how transfer fee expectations can distort public perception of an objectively competent player.
