The most reliable jump-shooter of the 1960s — 10-time All-Star and the linchpin of the Philadelphia 76ers championship.
Harold Everett Greer was born in Huntington, West Virginia in 1936, one of the first Black players at Marshall University. Syracuse Nationals selected him in the second round of the 1958 NBA Draft. His 15-season career — spent entirely with the same franchise as it moved from Syracuse to Philadelphia — produced averages of 19.2 points per game and 10 All-Star appearances. He won the NBA championship with the 1967 Philadelphia 76ers team — the team that finally ended the Boston Celtics dynasty, winning 68 games and defeating them in five games in the Eastern Finals. He was named to the All-NBA Second Team seven times. He was notable for shooting free throws with his jump shot rather than standing still — a highly unusual technique that proved extremely effective as he shot 80% from the line across his career. He played in more games than any other 76er in franchise history. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982 and named to the NBA 50th Anniversary Team in 1996. His consistency across 15 seasons — never missing significant time to injury — was among the most impressive durability records of his era.
