Gerard Piqué Bernabéu was born in Barcelona in 1987 into a football family — his grandfather was a Barcelona director — and joined the club's academy at 10. He moved to Manchester United (2004–2008), making 23 appearances and winning the Premier League and Champions League (2008), with a loan at Zaragoza (2006–07). He returned to Barcelona in 2008 for £5 million — one of the great transfer bargains — and spent 14 seasons making 616 appearances, scoring 53 goals and winning 8 La Liga titles, 3 Champions Leagues and 32 major trophies. He earned 102 Spain caps scoring 5 goals, winning the World Cup (2010) and 2 European Championships. He won 72% of aerial duels and kept 281 clean sheets in 763 career appearances. His top speed of 31.2 km/h was high for a central defender and he covered 10.2 km per game. He retired in November 2022 in an emotional farewell at the Camp Nou. His relationship with Shakira and subsequent acrimonious split attracted more media attention than any Spanish footballer of his generation. He was named in the UEFA Team of the Year five times.
