The greatest all-rounder who ever lived — West Indian cricket's most complete individual.
Garfield St Aubrun Sobers was born in Bridgetown, Barbados in 1936. He is universally considered the greatest all-rounder in cricket history — his left-handed batting average of 57.78 in Tests places him among the finest batsmen ever, while his versatile left-arm bowling (slow, medium pace and fast) and his exceptional fielding make him the only cricketer to have been elite in every discipline simultaneously. He hit six sixes off a single over against Glamorgan in 1968 — the first time this was achieved in first-class cricket. He is the most celebrated individual in West Indian sports history. He was knighted in 1975.
