Flavia Pennetta was born on 25 February 1982 in Brindisi, Italy. She turned professional in 2001 and built a career as one of Italy's most consistent players. In 2015, she produced the performance of her life to win the US Open — becoming the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam singles title. In an extraordinary moment, moments after winning she announced her retirement in the trophy ceremony. She had been battling wrist and knee injuries and chose to end on the highest possible note. She married compatriot Fabio Fognini.
