New Orleans' greatest ever player — holder of the NFL's all-time passing yards record at retirement.
Drew Christopher Brees was born in Dallas, Texas in 1979 and attended Purdue University where he set Big Ten Conference passing records. San Diego Chargers selected him 32nd overall in the 2001 NFL Draft. His 20-season career produced 80,358 passing yards — the NFL all-time record at his retirement in 2021 — and 571 passing touchdowns — the second-highest total in NFL history. He won the Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints following the 2009 season — a championship that carried enormous cultural significance for a city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He was named Super Bowl XLIV MVP. He won the NFL MVP in 2008. He was selected to 13 Pro Bowls — the most by any quarterback in NFL history. He holds the NFL record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass at 54. He holds or held numerous other NFL passing records. His career completion percentage of 67.7% was the highest in NFL history at retirement. He rebuilt his career after a severe shoulder injury in 2005 required extensive surgery — San Diego cut him, New Orleans signed him and the partnership transformed the franchise and the city. He became the defining figure in New Orleans Saints history and one of the most celebrated quarterbacks of his era.
