The most famous play in college football history — Flutie's Hail Mary against Miami in 1984.
Douglas Richard Flutie was born in Manchester, Maryland in 1962. He attended Boston College and became the school's — and New England's — most celebrated college athlete. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1984. His four-year career produced 10,579 passing yards and 67 touchdowns — then a Division I record. His career-defining moment came on November 23, 1984 in a nationally televised game against the defending national champion Miami Hurricanes. With six seconds remaining and BC trailing 45-41, he launched a 63-yard Hail Mary pass that his cousin Gerard Phelan caught in the end zone for a 47-45 victory. The pass is the most replayed play in college football history. He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the 11th round of the 1985 NFL Draft but spent most of his professional career in the CFL, where he won six Grey Cups and three CFL MVP awards before returning to the NFL in 1998 and playing until 2005. His Hail Mary pass against Miami remains the single most dramatic moment in the sport's television history.
