Hungary's greatest modern player — Liverpool's captain at 23 and the free kick that qualified Hungary for the Euros.
Dominik Szoboszlai was born in Székesfehérvár, Hungary in 2000. Red Bull Salzburg's system developed him before RB Leipzig and then Liverpool paid £60 million for him in 2023. He became Liverpool's captain in 2023 — aged 23 — the first Hungarian to captain a Premier League club. He won the Premier League in his first Liverpool season in 2024. He represented Hungary 67 times — his free kick against Iceland in injury time to qualify Hungary for Euro 2020 is the most celebrated moment in Hungarian football since the 1950s. His combination of long-range shooting, creative passing and pressing intensity has made him one of the Premier League's most dynamic midfielders. He scored on his Liverpool debut against Chelsea. His role as Hungary's captain and his most important player makes him a national figure in a country whose football had declined dramatically from its 1950s peak. He is considered Hungary's most talented player since the Magical Magyars era.
