The Captain — New York Yankees legend and the most celebrated shortstop of the modern era.
Derek Sanderson Jeter was born in Pequannock, New Jersey in 1974. New York Yankees selected him sixth overall in the 1992 MLB Draft. His 20-season career — spent entirely with the Yankees — produced 3,465 hits, a .310 batting average and five World Series championships (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009). He was named World Series MVP in 2000. He won the Rookie of the Year in 1996. He was selected to 14 All-Star games. He was the defining player of the Yankees dynasty of the late 1990s and 2000s. The Flip — his improvisational relay throw to home plate in the 2001 ALCS to cut down Jeremy Giambi at the plate — is one of baseball's most celebrated instinctive plays. He holds the Yankees all-time records for hits, games played, at-bats, doubles and stolen bases. He made 1,274 errors in his career but also produced extraordinary defensive plays. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020 with 99.75% of the vote — the third-highest percentage in history. He later became co-owner and chief executive of the Miami Marlins. His leadership, consistency and the sheer volume of winning he was part of made him the most celebrated Yankees player of the post-DiMaggio era.
