Manchester United's greatest modern goalkeeper — four Premier League titles and more Player of the Year awards than any keeper in club history.
David de Gea Quintana was born in Madrid, Spain in 1990. Atlético Madrid developed him before Manchester United paid £17.8 million for him in 2011 — a difficult first season led to immediate calls for his return to Spain. He became the most decorated individual award winner in United history — named United's Player of the Year a record four consecutive times (2014–2018). His reflexes — particularly his ability to save point-blank shots from impossible angles — were rated by analysts as the finest in the Premier League during his peak. He was crucial to keeping United competitive through years of declining squad quality after Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year multiple times. He left United in 2023 when contract negotiations broke down after a season in which his error rate increased. He represented Spain 46 times but faced competition from Casillas and then Kepa. He remains the most celebrated goalkeeper in United history since Schmeichel.
