The architect of the Air Coryell offence — transformed passing statistics in the early 1980s.
Dan Fouts was born in San Francisco, California in 1951. The Chargers selected him 64th overall in 1973. Under coach Don Coryell's Air Coryell system, he produced three consecutive seasons of over 4,000 passing yards — unheard of in the early 1980s. He set the NFL record for passing yards in a season (4,802 in 1981). He never won a Super Bowl. He threw for 43,040 career yards. He was one of the first quarterbacks to demonstrate that an offence based primarily on passing could be dominant.
