Chelsea's match-winner — named Premier League Player of the Season at 21, the breakout story of 2023-24.
Cole Palmer was born in Wythenshawe, Manchester in 2002. Manchester City's academy developed him from childhood and he made sporadic first-team appearances without establishing himself as a regular starter. Chelsea paid £40 million for him in August 2023 — a transfer initially met with limited fanfare. His 2023-24 debut Chelsea season produced 22 Premier League goals and 11 assists — totals that made him statistically the most productive player under 22 in the Premier League's history for a single season. He was named Premier League Player of the Season. He scored four goals in Chelsea's 4-3 victory over Manchester United — the most goals by an individual in a Premier League game in recent memory. He was called up to England's Euro 2024 squad and came off the bench to score the equaliser in the final against Spain that briefly drew England level before they lost. His combination of composure — his shot-stopping, dribbling and finishing exhibiting an unusual calm for his age — and statistical production has been compared to the young Eden Hazard.
